![]() ![]() If the radio owner should touch the metal chassis and an earth ground (like a metal water pipe), he will only be subjected to the voltage on neutral- typically, this won't be very far off earth ground. Ideally, neutral should connect to the metal chassis. The reason that the line cord prongs are different is to ensure that the "hot" and "neutral" sides of the incoming power go to the right place in the radio. These have probably been all phased out by now. ![]() I think that when this set was made there were still a few sections of the country that used 110V DC for household power (an echo of the Edison-Westinghouse/Tesla feud). It would if you have DC line power (very unlikely). No, the power cord "polarity" makes no difference if you are operating the set on AC. I DONT KNOW IF THE TUBES ARE WORKING PROPERLY EITHER SINCE I HAVENT HAD THEM TESTED. COULD I POSSIBLY HAVE THE POWER CORD INSTALLED INCORRECTLY? COULD THIS CAUSE THE TUBE TO BLOW OR IS THERE POSSIBLY ANOTHER ISSUE? IVE DOUBLE AND TRIPLE CHECKED ALL THE WORK I DID AND IT ALL SEEMS CORRECT. I HAD AN EXTRA 35Z5-GT TUBE LAYING AROUND SO I INSTALLED IT THINKING IT COULD HAVE BEEN A BAD TUBE, BUT IT DID THE SAME THING. AT THE SAME TIME THE DIAL LAMP GET EXTREMELY BRIGHT AND IT BLEW TOO. ANYWAY, THE 35Z5-GT RECTIFIER TUBE WAS GLOWING FOR AROUND 8 SECONDS AND THEN IT PROCEEDED TO GREAT EXTREMELY BRIGHT AND THEN POPPED AND LET THE SMOKE OUT. ONE HAS A NON-GLASS CASE SO I DONT KNOW IF IT WAS WORKING. WHEN I PLUGGED IT IN, THE DIAL LAMP LITE UP AND A COUPLE OF THE TUBES STARTED TO GLOW. I INSTALLED A NEW POWER CORD ON THE UNIT. I RECAPPED IT AND REPLACED ALL THE RESISTORS. ::WILL THE POWER CORD POLARITY HAVE AN EFFECT ON THE OPERATION OF A RECTIFIER TUBE? IF HAVE A 1947 RCA RADIOLA 61-8 THAT I JUST REBUILT THE CHASSIS ON. PS: you can get the circuit diagram here: :PS: It's easier to read posts that are NOT ALL IN CAPS! The pilot light is wired into the 35Z5 heater, so losing the 35Z5 can also kill the pilot lamp. Did you check the filter (electrolytic) cap? A shorted cap could do this. :I wouldn't keep feeding 35Z5s to this radio. :WILL THE POWER CORD POLARITY HAVE AN EFFECT ON THE OPERATION OF A RECTIFIER TUBE?
